How to Travel Sustainably in Miami

As part of #TheGreenverseOnTour, our co-founders traveled to Miami, FL this past week. While perhaps the city isn’t known for its vegan cuisine or sustainable innovation, they found many ways to explore the city with lower environmental impact. Below is a comprehensive guide to green traveling in Miami, from lodging to restaurants to transportation!

Lodging

Choosing a quality place to stay in Miami can be tough. Do you go with the popular South Beach hotels, or the more quite downtown/Brickell options? For us, we did neither. We always choose Airbnbs when traveling due to their lower environmental impact and often better prices. We stayed in a condo downtown for under $375 that could house up to four people. Check out the listing here.

Transportation

Let’s face it: cars dominate Miami. Not only that, but many drive fuel inefficient vehicles or sports cars. While you can’t change the culture of a community overnight, as a visitor, it is fairly easy to get around the city a little more sustainably. There are plenty of Citibike rentals in the South Beach area, perfect for a quick trip to the beach or store. If you’re downtown/Brickell or Wynwood area, the Miami Mover is a perfect option to quickly hop around neighborhoods. The best part? It’s FREE for all passengers. There is also a larger metro system that connects the Miami-Dade county as well.

Dining

If you’ve ever been to Miami, you know Latin/Cuban food dominates the cuisine. There is a rich food history in the city and if you do eat meat/animal products, try to look for restaurants that source locally. In a city like Miami, finding restaurants that get their ingredients from nearby sources isn’t that difficult given the prime location, so a quick google search should give you what you need. But, vegans and non-vegans alike can definitely indulge in the plant-based scene. Mostly upscale trendy restaurants, the vegan eateries are nothing short of excellent. This article will be updated with a link to a comprehensive review on vegan eats in Miami, but quick tip: Planta in South Beach will definitely win over a non-vegan crowd.
