Vegan Soul Food? Oakland's 'Souley Vegan'

There are some foods and cuisines that, once vegan, you may find yourself missing. Even if you are merely trying to incorporate more vegan/sustainable eating habits, passing up on the delicious comforts of soul food is a tough pill to swallow.

Fortunately, Oakland's Souley Vegan has changed the soul food vegan game. Started in 2007 by Tamearra Dyson, Souley Vegan began as a pop-up that would sell at farmer's markets and the like. Dyson, a long-time vegan (vegetarian since childhood) left her very promising career in medicine to do something she had been passionate about for ages: vegan cooking, and thus Souley Vegan was born. With only $27 in the register, Souley Vegan secured a store front location in 2009. However, things have changed pretty drastically since then for the little vegan soul food shop.

Souley Vegan has been featured on USA Today, SF Gate, and even Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. It's no wonder they've garnered so much popularity in the past few years; the food speaks for itself. Try their Everything Plate; for only $19, you can taste all their delicious sides, such as candied yams, southern fried tofu, and vegan mac and cheese!
