SUSTAINABILITY FOR CARNIVORES: PONO BURGER LA
If you are interested in eating more sustainably, but having a difficult time transitioning to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, look no further than this burger chain in Southern California. Another sustainable eatery for meat eaters, Pono Burger LA focuses on using in-season, local ingredients from family-owned farms.
One of the reasons that the meat industry is typically unsustainable is not only its water consumption but the mass production needed to keep up with the volume demand of the fast food industry. Sourcing beef from locally owned farms in smaller quantity reduces high volume, unethical consumption.
We visited Pono Burger last year in Santa Monica (pre veggie days!) and it was one of the best casual dining experiences ever. Not only is their food absolutely incredible, but you can feel good about eating it too. The inside of the shop is decorated with memorabilia from Hawai'i, where the founder is from, and there is a historic, inviting, yet casual atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
We can't wait to go back to try their vegetarian and vegan offerings such as their portobello mushroom sandwich and the hand cut pomme frites, but if you are a met-eater trying to switch to a more sustainable way of eating, try Pono Burger. Great for you, great for the planet!
